I think most writers struggle with how and when to try to monetize their writing. I know I have. I had thought to wait until I gained a large following on Substack to do so, but, honestly, I don’t know if that’s going to happen any time in the foreseeable future.
Realistically, I do want to try to make money writing. More of my week is spent writing, editing, or trying to promote my writing than doing anything else. In addition to the short fiction you read through my newsletter, I’m also currently writing a young adult science fiction series, which I’m considering serializing on a new platform that will be coming soon (more on that if and when it happens).
I’ve always felt a little uncomfortable asking readers to pay for my work. I’m not sure why. I have no difficulty stating my fees to coaching or editing clients. But somehow my writing feels different. Maybe it’s because it’s so personal to me. Maybe it’s a lack of confidence in my writing, though I don’t think so. Whatever the reason, I find myself reluctant even now to bring this up.
But, and it’s a big but, I do believe writers should be compensated for their work. I’m so happy that you, my readers, enjoy my stories and keep opening up your newsletters to read them. I love it when you share them, as well, as that brings in new readers.
The Ask
So here’s the ask. If you enjoy my work, please consider visiting my Buy Me a Coffee page. Currently it’s only hosting old stories that you’ve already read here. That’s not the point. There, you can buy me a coffee in one of two ways.
You can offer one-time support:
Or you can become a member (subscribe) at different levels. The least expensive option is only $3.00 a month. It’s not much for most people, but if enough people sign up, it adds up. This is modern day patronage of the arts through crowdfunding.
Let me be clear. I don’t expect people to pay to read my stories. They remain free for anyone who might enjoy reading them, other than those I will release only to members (I have to offer some kind of incentive). I won’t shun you if you don’t buy me a coffee. I won’t think less of you. I know not everyone can afford to do so and not everyone wants to.
But if you do feel so inclined, please hop on over to Buy Me a Coffee, and, you know, buy me a coffee! Many thanks and happy reading!
Oh, and here’s a shiny button! You may see it on some of my stories moving forward!
I understand your frustration. It’s hard for writers, and that’s why I do a day job. In my country, I have eight different bills to pay monthly and late payment penalties are attached to all of them. Plus my country has removed many food items out of the reach of the poor. Food prices are moving towards hell daily. I encourage all writers, payment or not, don’t give up. Your power of words has value to someone.
