Not even a power outage could keep Eli from finishing this book. He had waited for a whole year for the last installment of his favorite series. He had just been getting to the good part when the lights went out.
Mom had said it was time to go to bed anyway. Eli couldn’t settle down. He just had to know how the story ended. Jed was lost in the cave with orcs chasing him. How could Eli possibly sleep?
He found a flashlight and got through two chapters before the battery died. When Dad caught him rummaging in the dark through the junk drawer in the kitchen, he had taken pity on him.
“I remember my own late nights reading way past bedtime.” Dad used the light from his phone to make his way into the garage. He came back with an industrial sized flashlight. “The battery on this won’t give out. Just don’t tell your mother.”
Mom’s voice came from behind them both. “I won’t tell either. Just make sure you’re up for school in the morning.”
This was inspired by my own late night adventures with books. I wish I could say I had outgrown them (and the bleary eyes in the morning), but that would be lying!
It's not that easy, though. Because those are the books that I'm sorry when they're over!
Go, parents! I like that they both encourage the late night reading by story’s end.
