Della never tired of the debate over the use of commas. Every time she edited a sentence that needed one, it only reinforced her commitment to their appropriate usage. The current story she was editing was rife with examples. Laughing at an especially egregious omission, she filed the paragraph containing it away for her next workshop on punctuation.
The newly hatched chick let loose a series of plaintive cheeps. “He’s just a peeping Tom,” Carl said to his brother.
Della was still laughing when she completed the edit and sent the manuscript, along with her bill, back to the client.
You have to read this one with a bit of a farm boy inflection for full impact. Della isn’t the only one laughing!
