Life as a spacer had denied Richonne many things, including beaches. Planetside for the first time, today she would remedy that.
She dug her bare toes into the grainy sand, loving the feel of it. Not ready to move on, she lay down, reveling in its warmth. The ocean would wait
I’ve been so busy I’ve missed the last many Fifties by the Fire prompts from Along the Hudson. So I’ve gone back and taken a few to write for you. This is the first. The prompt was to write a fifty-word story (or work of creative nonfiction, or poem) about a first.
You can read the wonderful stories that people who did participate in the prompt on time shared here.
I thought about common firsts, but then wondered more about someone setting foot on a planet for the first time. What would be interesting to them? What might they have never experienced? (so much).
I’ve always loved beaches. We went frequently and played in the sand and waves when I was a child. What would it be like to have missed out on that? I know there are many native to this planet who have, but I decided to make the very idea of such a thing foreign to my main character. Doing it in fifty words was challenging but fun.
Feel free to share your own fifty-word story below or just leave a comment!
The thought of a warm, sandy beach brings back happy childhood memories. Mine was White Rock. Sand and ice cream and sea gulls and pools of warm water 🥰
I love your creative take on this, Dascha. Such a fun and thoughtful story!
