Miriam smiled to herself as she listened to the whispers and saw the self-satisfied smiles of the townsfolk whenever she walked through the downtown hub. The truth, which would not appear in her memoir, was far more mundane.
Miriam had been fast asleep when the thief tripped over her cat, bashing his head on the marble foot of her fireplace.
