“Very funny, guys.” Lance shook his head at the ridiculousness of his friends trying to scare him by hiding behind trees with only their arms showing. That wouldn’t have scared him in third grade, let alone in his final year of college.
Still, it was Halloween, and they were all here to party. “Come back inside. The keg just arrived.”
Instead of answering, moans filled his ears, and the arms began to writhe. Right. They were going to play this for all it was worth. “Fine. Stay out here, but you’re going to miss all the fun.” Lance turned his back and stepped through the sliding door into the frat house.
Inside, he saw a girl he hadn’t met before. Tall, with black hair and startling green eyes, the willowy beauty raised an eyebrow at him, then turned and started walking up the stairs toward the bedrooms. She didn’t look back.
Not sure whether she meant for him to follow, Lance hesitated. He had just decided she couldn’t have when a soft whisper sounded in his ear. “Aren’t you coming?” Lance spun around but no one stood near him. He turned back, looking to the stairs. She stood, halfway up, her head turned to look at him. Again, her eyebrow rose, and she turned and continued her climb.
A shiver of not-quite fear and not-quite anticipation ran up Lance’s spine. He must have imagined the voice, but the girl’s intent was clear now. She wanted him! Trying not to seem too eager, he made his way through the crowd of partyers, then climbed the stairs after her.
At the top of the stairs, he quickened his pace. She had disappeared into one of the rooms. He checked the first, backing out red-faced, having interrupted another couple. He knocked on the next door. Receiving no reply, he opened the door. The girl sat on the bed watching him with a wicked smile. Again, the whisper in his ear. “Come here.”
Lance lost all volition. He rushed over to her, not bothering to ask her name or where she had come from. Unable to control himself, he immediately kissed her. The kiss filled him with an insatiable need. He had to possess her.
“Actually,” the whisper tickled his ear, “I shall possess you!”
Lance’s screams died unborn as she sucked his life out through his mouth. His body withered, leaving only his arms untouched. The husk of his body, neither alive nor dead, somehow still held up his equally withered head.
The girl cackled, pulling a broomstick from under the bed. She threw what was left of Lance over one shoulder, then flew out the window, landing on the lawn behind the trees. There, Lance saw the remains of his friends, each wrapped around a tree trunk. As the witch placed the newest addition to her display, she cackled again. “I haven’t had this much Halloween fun in centuries!”
