“We are not going home with a dog today.” Marley kept her face stern in the face of the twins’ pleading eyes. “We’re just looking. That was the deal.”
“But Mom,” Evan said, giving her his well-rehearsed poor-me face, “it’s been months since Bella died.”
“We need a dog,” Emily chimed in. “You know you’re happier when we have one.”
The kids were right, but Marley still missed Bella so much. How could she invite another dog into her heart?
When they arrived at the adoption center, Marley refrained from repeating her admonishment to the kids, but her mind was made up. At least two years before another dog.
Right up until a roly-poly golden lab crossed with who knew what pushed his way into her arms and her heart.
As she held the pup, he snuggled in and fell asleep, safe and secure. She filled out the adoption papers with him still in her arms and handed the car keys to Emily, who had just passed her driving exam.
Marley caught Evan’s smug look as the newly named Rollie slept in her arms all the way home. Everyone knew whose bed he would be sleeping in that night.
Not exactly the way Jace entered my life, but close enough! And I had actually said never again. Famous last words!
How could anyone say no to that face? 🐶
There was a time many years ago that the girls and I wanted a dog but I just couldn't find one I connected with. One day when we were heading out for a hike, I took a wrong turn and ended up down a side road and turned around in a driveway where there was a free puppy sign. We decided to head in and this floppy eared purebred Heinz 57 (according to the vet) looked up and we were all fell instantly in love. You just know, right?❤️🦮
