Boarding the plane behind the Marshal, Nadezhda left her old life behind. The flight attendant checked her ticket. “Welcome aboard, Carol.”
Carol savored her new name, both excited and scared for the future.
Nadezhda means hope. I first heard this name when introduced to the poetry of Nadezhda Mandelstam. For some reason, the image accompanying this story, with dandelion seeds being blown to scatter in the wind, made me think of the witness protection program. Once again, my mind sometimes goes to odd places.
