Matt made his first pinhole camera the day he discovered Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. The camera bug had bitten several years before. He loved taking pictures; he loved cameras of all kinds.
Matt collected cameras the way others collected stamps. He bought them new but also haunted antique shops looking for the oldest cameras he could find. Dozens lined the shelves of his den.
The excitement of making his own camera was something he couldn’t pass up. On his first attempt, he found instructions for making a pinhole camera from cardboard. Each year his cameras became a little more sophisticated, with emphasis on the word little. But his skill as a pinhole photographer grew.
Of all the pictures Matt shot through the years with all of his cameras, he was never more proud than the day one of his simple, black and-white pinhole photos took first place on Pinhole Day.
This story was inspired by my late brother Matthew’s love of cameras and photography. He actually did receive some kind of honor from Pinhole Day, though I don’t remember what it was. For anyone with an interest in photography, here’s a link to the website.
I can picture the look on his face. 😉
I’ve always wanted to make a pinhole camera. Maybe I’ll try this this weekend with my kids. Thanks for another fun story
