Nan, a new journalism grad, couldn’t wait to start using her new—actually old—desk. She unlocked the top drawer with the key the antique dealer had dug out from a pile of old, mismatched keys, assuring her it was the right one.
Inside, she found a piece of yellowed paper stuck in the back. She carefully teased it from the corner, then examined her find.
In faded ink she read the six words written in a flowing script:
How can I live without her?
Her journalist instincts buzzing, Nan grabbed her keys and headed back to the antique shop.
