Some days, Dr. Ron wondered why he pushed himself so hard. He wasn’t getting any younger. Looking over his patient list, he saw her name. No one, including him, had budged her long-standing depression.
A month ago, he had sent her for a new treatment, a Hail Mary.
The moment Lyn stepped into his office he saw it. The lines etched into her face had disappeared.
She smiled.
“Miracles do happen,” she said. “I still have bad days, but there are good days too. Thank you.”
Dr. Ron returned her smile, remembering again why he came to work each day.
I wrote this drabble as a Christmas gift to my current psychiatrist, a man deeply dedicated to his patients, who takes a truly holistic approach to the treatment of mental illness. With deepest gratitude, this one is for you, Dr. Ron!
That is such a sweet homage to your doctor! Well done!
