“Have you any dreams you’d like to share?”
Fantasy had not fared well as humans turned from imagination to screens dictating their every thought.
Flesh had all but obliterated her silvery visage. Her magic faded daily.
I opened to her my deepest, hidden dreams, knowing I only delayed the inevitable.
Thanks to Justin Deming for this prompt from our Medium days: Radio Surfing. We were supposed to tune into radio stations and write down the first line we heard to 3 different songs. I haven’t listened to the radio in years, so I created my own version of this.
I used Google Play, choosing different categories, then touching the screen randomly to choose a song. For whichever song came up, I touched the screen again to pick a random point in the song and used the first line sung.
The three songs I came up with were as follows:
From a classic rock list (which I used for all the songs) I first landed on Helpless, from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s album, Deja Vu. The line: “The chains have all been tied across the door.”
The song that inspired this story is Dreams, from Fleetwood Mac’s album, Rumours. The line, of course, is, “Have you any dreams you’d like to share.”
Finally, I landed on The Very Best of Chicago: Saturday in the Park. The line was, “A bronze man still can tell stories his own way.” While I didn’t write a story around this, I had an attack of nostalgia and listened to the album while writing that day!
Lovely story, Dascha!
A stunning piece of writing, Dasha. It really resonates deep within me.
