I can’t believe we’ve made it to Saturday already. This has been such a fun week. Thanks again to everyone who has participated, both as a reader and by providing prompts.
At the end of today’s prompt stories, you’ll find an addendum to Friday’s stories. Three prompts came in late in the day/evening. I couldn’t resist finding stories for them.
Apex Predator
As dawn crept across the savanna, deer fled the riverbank at the lion’s approach, none wanting to be the one to fall. The great predator’s thunderous paws calmly padded toward the water, prey far from his mind. He drank his fill, then lay down to sleep beneath the warming sun.
Twitter prompt from @imagestoby: savanna, prey, dawn
Old Friends
Sixteen-year-old Claire hardly dared hope the orphaned cub would survive when he arrived at the lion sanctuary where she volunteered under the guidance and wisdom of its wildlife director.
Returning at twenty-five with a degree in conservation biology, her heart swelled as the now four-hundred-pound lion rushed to greet her.
Facebook prompt from Laura Gannon: hope, guidance, wisdom
Friday Stories
His Story
They found him lost in the snow, suffering from amnesia, seemingly from the head injury that ought to have killed him.
Aniij imagined him a noble warrior, exiled by an evil chieftain. When the police chief came and cuffed him to the bed, she revised her fantasy, labeling him dangerous.
Twitter Prompt from @BillAdler: lost, amnesia, exiled
Marooned
When Locke’s ship crash landed on the ice planet, he focused on survival. The ship’s replicator would provide food and water. Communications were down, but he could fix that and call for help. He only hoped, as he surveyed the frozen wasteland, that his power held out until rescue came.
Twitter prompt from @MarkStarlin: planet, frozen, survival
Bookworm
A sudden sunburst lit up the field, light glinting off crystals embedded in the ice encrusted snow.
To Syl, the trees, buried in white, looked like topiaries, carved in the shapes of creatures from Middle Earth. Craving a Tolkien fix, she dug out The Hobbit and sat down to read.
Substack prompt from Kim Smyth: sunburst, crystals, topiaries
Thanks for reading! Please leave comments and I’m always open to new prompts from readers. An ideal prompt consists of three words: two concrete nouns and one abstract, but almost anything will do.
Yes! That story was my favorite of this list, thanks for using my prompts again!
From wild life to scifi, each of these stories could be the kernel of something bigger and exciting. So good.
