Lizbeth had no intention of choosing sides until she was sure who was going to win. Though the rumor she had started was the cause of this knock-down, drag-out cat fight, she was distanced enough from it that Sela would never trace it back to her. Was it her fault Felicia had been stupid enough to repeat it in Sela’s earshot?
Stirring the pot was Lizbeth’s favorite pastime. Even at the expense of her best friend. Of course, it wasn’t really a rumor if it was kind of true, was it? Lizbeth had admitted to secretly going on a date with Micah. Everybody knew what he wanted. And he always got what he wanted. Even if Sela hadn’t admitted to that part.
Lizbeth jumped as Micah sidled up beside her, brushing against her. Regaining her cool, she glared at him. “What do you want?”
“Nothing, but you should check your Facebook.”
“What do you mean?” It suddenly dawned on Lizbeth exactly what he meant. He wouldn’t. He couldn’t! She frantically pulled her phone out of her back pocket and brought up Facebook. There, plastered across a banner she had never put there, was an image of herself and Micah making out on her bed. They’d been secretly hooking up for months, though she hadn’t breathed a word to anyone, not even Sela. She’d been so careful…
Lizbeth looked up to the sound of clapping to see Sela and Felicia taking a bow as laughter began to replace the applause. At her expense! She looked from them to a smirking Micah. Face flushed with humiliation, she fled, barely making it into a bathroom stall before losing her lunch.
Prompts 2 Go asked for a story based on a rumor. I chose the first sentence from a list of first lines. Sometimes it’s good to see troublemakers get their comeuppance!
