Beryl stomped her way back to her siblings, sick and tired of being given all the dirty jobs. Why did females always have to do the work? Males were so lazy!
As if reading her mind, Blanche said, “Because males only have one function—to service the queen. We may have to do all the work, but they only get one big hurrah and then they die. I know which I’d rather do.”
Beryl sighed. Blanche was right. There was an order to everything. Male’s lives were short, though sweet. Hers was busy, but what was an ant to do?
I almost called this story “The Angry Ant,” but that would have given it away too early. Almost all work in an ant colony is done by females. Male ants, by and large, exist to help the queen populate the colony and to establish new colonies. Their lives are short. Interestingly, they are formed by unfertilized eggs.
A story plus ant trivia. Please leave a comment. I do love to hear from readers, male or female.
My mind got bent 😂. The daily grind, sounds familiar!
I love picturing an ant stomping back to complain!
