Sometimes you’ve just gotta know when to fold ‘em. Joel firmly agreed with Kenny Rogers on that one, though he’d never been a fan of his music. The problem was, even when he knew he should, sometimes his contrary nature just wouldn’t let him do it. Like tonight, for example.
When Lizbeth told him he was teetering on the edge during their argument, his brain was screaming “Stop! Don’t do it!” While his stupid-ass mouth had to push it just that little bit further. He’d even known he was wrong as soon as the words had left his mouth. He just couldn’t admit it.
Joel called himself every kind of a fool as he wadded up his jacket for a pillow. They should have bought a softer sofa. He shivered in the too-cold living room and considered asking if Liz would give him the extra blanket from the foot of the bed, then thought better of it. This was definitely a when to fold ‘em moment.
This came from a prompt I gave myself! For some reason the line, “You gotta know when to fold ‘em” from “The Gambler” popped into my head and I challenged myself to write a story based on it.
Here’s a link to the song, if anyone would like to listen. Like Joel, I’m not a fan.
Oh, and comment, if you feel so inclined!
I've said that line to myself so many times but I always add the next one, too... know when to walk away, know when to run 😁
One of my husband's favorite mottos,.and songs 😄 A lot of Wisdom there.
