I would find it difficult to have a child so diametrically opposed to my own values. I'm not sure how I would deal with it in my own life. Families are complicated. What about possible grandchildren? What are one's "deal breakers" for relationships?
I guess I've known a few—a very few—folks who had a child that was very different in the way your story describes. I see much more often a conservative father becoming estranged from his increasingly 'liberal' family. But they don't really talk about it and I don't think they'd oppose their children outright. They'll kick 'em out, though, and effectively disown them.
I agree that you see the opposite far more often. Children are sometimes very affected by outside influences, though. Consider children who become radicalized. Fortunately, as you said, it's uncommon.
